Großwelsbach was incorporated on 01.01.1994. The village is a church village with a manor. A country road leads upstream near the water to Kleinwelsbach. You can admire many a picturesque group of trees there.

It was first mentioned in documents in 1195, when the Germerode monastery maintained a nunnery in Großwelsbach and had extensive land at its disposal. Hans Berlepsch acquired the monastery estate in 1578 and it remained in his family's possession as a manor for a long time. The church of St. Blasii was built from border dolomite, its exact age is unknown.
