Situated between the former residential town of Mühlhausen, the spa town of Bad Langensalza and the UNESCO Hainich National Park, the Heroldishausen a clean, well-kept and romantic part of the rural community of Unstrut-Hainich. The municipality is crossed by the Suthbach stream, which feeds the nearby Großenottern reservoir.

The jewels of the small village are the solidly built Protestant church St. Crucis and on the other hand the Village green with its large chestnut and lime trees. A chapel in Heroldishausen was first mentioned in 1017. Emperor Henry II gave it to his wife Kunigunde, who had founded a nunnery in Kaufungen in Hesse in the same year. A relief on the church wall shows the origin of the church's name. It shows Empress Cunegonde placing her right hand on the cross. Today's walled hall church was built in the middle of the 18th century using the quarry stones from the previous Romanesque building.
