Mittelpöllnitz

Mittelpöllnitz is a municipality in the northeast of the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia.

Coming from the direction of Pößneck on the B 281, you leave the Orlasenke in Triptis, cross the watershed between the Saale and Elster and 2 km behind Triptis, lying in the valley depression of the Pöllnitzbach, you see Mittelpöllnitz on the B2. The highest building in the village, the church with its 27 m high tower and its 12-cornered ground plan, which is unique in the surrounding area, immediately catches the eye. The municipality of Mittelpöllnitz with the district of Porstendorf is one of the medium-sized municipalities of the administrative community and borders on the municipalities of Braunsdorf, Niederpöllnitz and Großebersdorf of the district of Greiz as well as on the municipality of Geroda and the town of Triptis. The origin of the village is probably to be put in the time between the 9th and 11th century. The first documented mention of the name Polnic dates back to 1238. The name Pöllnitz is derived from the Slavic word Polnica, in German: Fluss im offenen Gelände oder Fließ in der Ebene and was first a field name for the area between Triptis and Weida. Mittelpöllnitz is a typical street village, whose form was shaped in the past by the agricultural use of the surrounding area. However, due to structural changes in agriculture, the farms are no longer used for farming.

In the west of the village Mittelpöllnitz a new housing estate was built, consisting of single-family houses. If you continue in the direction of Gera, you will leave Mittelpöllnitz in the direction of the district of Porstendorf. On the hill between the two villages there is a windmill built in 1837. At the end of Porstendorf there is a modern gas station with a service area and a 5 ha industrial park. In Mittelpöllnitz there is a day care center for children. There is a community partnership between the community of Mittelpöllnitz and the community of Letiny (Czech Republic).
