Artern

The small town of Artern is picturesquely situated directly on the Unstrut River, surrounded by the fertile fields of the Golden and Diamond Meadows, the mountain ranges of the Kyffhäuser Mountains and the Hohe Schrecke. Thus, the place is a suitable vacation destination especially for nature active tourists. Cyclists can start directly from here on the long-distance cycle paths Unstrut-Werra and Unstrut cycle path. Hikers can discover Artern, for example, on the paths through the Salinepark or over the vineyard, past the historic Jüngkens observation tower (visit by appointment). As far as Kyffhäuser, guests can hike in the footsteps of the poet Novalis, who once stayed in Artern. At the end of the 18th century, Novalis inspected Artern's saltworks, which Johann Gottfried Borlach founded in the town around 1733. Although the saltworks were closed in the 20th century, the brine spring with a salt content of 2.25 % still feeds the brine swimming pool today. Rare plants that are otherwise native to the coast grow along the protected Solgraben. Artern is an old town, which was first mentioned in the 8th century. St. Mary's and St. Vitus' churches are among the oldest buildings in the town. For excursions, there are numerous destinations in the immediate vicinity, such as the Panorama Museum in Bad Frankenhausen, the Rosarium in Sangerhausen or the suspension rope bridge in the Hohe Schrecke.
