The healing power and high concentration of brine once brought great wealth to the town. In 1818, the Frankenhausen physician Dr. Manniske introduced brine baths and opened the spa. In 1927 the designation "Bad" followed to the city name and in 2007 the award of the predicate "Sole-Heilbad". The healing brine can be enjoyed in the Kyffhäuser Therme or in the brine water vital park. In the Kyffhäuser Therme, you can float in the brine pools, which are up to 35°C warm. The spacious sauna area with sauna garden, the wellness oasis and the Dead Sea salt grotto refresh and revitalize body, mind and soul. The brine water vitality park is the world's first and so far only public outdoor brine pool with exclusively biological water treatment. The inhalation pavilion, the Kneipp pool, the foot reflexology course or the Parcours Santé complement the fun of splashing and swimming. There is also the possibility to rent bicycles and e-bikes, as well as equipment for crossminton and the mini-golf course. In the adjacent show boiling house there are show demonstrations of the salt boiling process in historical costumes.
After so much relaxation, head up to the Kyffhäuser Monument - the third largest national monument in Germany. In 1896, the 81-meter-high monument was erected in honor of the German Emperor Wilhelm I.
In addition to Germany's largest monumental painting, which was created by Werner Tübke from 1983 to 1987 and measures 1,722 m², the Panorama Museum also presents changing special exhibitions of mainly contemporary figurative art of international standing.
However, the spa town of Bad Frankenhausen offers another superlative! Here stands the highest leaning tower in the world. As a landmark, the over 600-year-old church tower towers over the town. The spire is 4.60 m out of plumb and thus more crooked than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Those interested in nature and geology, on the other hand, will get their money's worth at the Barbarossa Cave near Rottleben or on numerous hiking opportunities, such as the 37 km long quality hiking trail Kyffhäuserweg. Hiking and biking in the Kyffhäuser Nature Park is the best way to experience the unique landscape and discover the rare salt and orchid plants. The Kyffhäuser National Geopark extends over an area of about 833 km² from Kindelbrück in Thuringia to Kelbra in Saxony-Anhalt.
