Kella is a clustered village. It is located in southern Eichsfeld and borders Pfaffschwende to the north, Geismar and Großtöpfer to the east and the municipality of Meinhard in Hesse to the south and west. The municipality lies between 230 and 520 meters above sea level. The Kellaer stream flows through the village and joins the Werra in Schwebda in Hesse.

The Eichsfeld community of Kella, which has 494 inhabitants, was first mentioned in a document in 1141. The village owes its name to its location in a hollow on the slope of the Gobert.

The church, built in 1854, is one of the parish's sights. It is dedicated to St. Martin. The valuable church furnishings include the baroque altar (1778), whose baroque oil painting comes from a Cistercian monastery, and the baptismal font. The bell tower next to the church (1909) is a special feature in the Eichsfeld region.

Also worth seeing is the chapel on the slope of the Gobert, which was built in 1867, destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in 1945. For many years it was inaccessible to the inhabitants of Kella, as this place of worship stood between the two border fences of the inner-German border.

A Way of the Cross leads to the chapel, which begins at the end of Gobertstraße. Miraculously, the chapel and the Way of the Cross were not destroyed by the construction of the border fortifications; only one station was buried and has not been found to this day. There is a shelter with a barbecue area near the chapel.

The parks at the entrance and exit of the village are beautifully laid out.

The charming landscape around Kella offers a variety of hiking trails. A popular hiking destination is the Gobert, at 537 m one of the highest elevations in the Eichsfeld. You can get a beautiful view from the "Eichsfeldblick" rocky outcrop. From the nearby Silberklippe to the Salzfrau, the Wolfstisch, the Pferdloch and the Kalkofen, each an interesting vantage point with a legendary history.

Today, Kella presents itself to the visitor as a very well-kept village with facilities typical of the Eichsfeld, even in the village center.

In 1996, Kella was named the most beautiful village in the district and state of Thuringia in the "Our village should become more beautiful" competition.
