Schmiedefeld (654-801 m above sea level) is an old mining village that has been shaped by centuries of mining. You can still admire and marvel at some of the evidence of this mining activity today. These are the Morassina caves in the picturesque Schwefelloch, a show mine that is one of the most beautiful cave systems in the region due to its splendid colors. 90 % of the underground route are wheelchair accessible. 90 % of the underground route are wheelchair accessible. There is a restaurant attached to the show mine. The Morassina site also has a Kneipp facility and various adventure trails, e.g. a sensory trail. Those interested can learn about iron ore mining in Schmiedefeld by hiking along the educational mining trail in the Westfeld open-cast mine, and the history of the olive merchants is brought back to life in the herb and olives museum "Beim Giftmischer". On herb hikes over the Rauhhügel hill, you can see the Leipziger Turm tower, 802 m above sea level, with its restaurant from afar. The viewing platform with its breathtaking view over the Thuringian Forest and Franconian Forest is well worth a climb up the tower.
