Möckern is a municipality in the Saale-Holzland district. Fulfilling municipality is the city Stadtroda. The village is located about 2 km from the A4 freeway and about 5 km southwest of the Hermsdorf interchange.
The village is an Angerdorf of Slavic origin and was first mentioned in the 13th century in connection with Nicolaus von Möckern as the owner of the manor. The manor existed until 1830 and was owned by the von Hardenberg family, before it was sold to farmers and isolated. The Church of Möckern, located at the northeastern end of the town, was built in 1668 and renovated several times.
Geographically Möckern is located in the Weiherbach valley and belongs to the natural area of the Saale sandstone plates of the Thuringian Basin. The territory of Möckern is bordered by two streams. Once the Weiherbachwhich rises in the Wuske, and the Molkenbachwhich has its source in the Molkental valley. Surrounded by forests, the place is suitable as a starting point for extensive hikes in the Thuringian Woodland.
