Schwickershausen

Schwickershausen is located in the eastern foothills of the Rhön, on the western edge of the municipality of Grabfeld, on a gently sloping south-facing slope, directly on the border between Thuringia and Bavaria.

Schwickershausen was first mentioned in documents in 1187 under the name Schwiggershusin. The "Schwiggershusin" manor was granted by the Hennebergs to the noble family Marschalk zu Wallbach in 1333, who then handed over the property to the Lords of Kehre. During the Great German Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was burnt down by the revolutionary peasants. In 1540, Jacob von der Kehre began rebuilding the moated castle, which still stands today, on the site of the medieval bower.

During the Thirty Years' War, 130 inhabitants died of epidemics and there was a great famine in Schwickershausen and the surrounding area. The village has many well-preserved Franconian-style half-timbered houses and a bakehouse in the hop garden. The church in the center of the village was built in 1793. It is characterized by its simplicity. Remarkably, the pulpit, altar and organ form a single unit in the light-filled interior of the church.

A modern retirement and nursing home was opened on the site of the former border company in 1994. There is an idyllic reservoir in the south-western part of the village. With a size of approx. 20 hectares, it is not only interesting for anglers and boaters.

Today, Schwickershausen has 374 inhabitants and a district area of 623 ha.
