Nordhausen

On the sunny side of the Harz Mountains lies the Rolandstadt Nordhausen - the thousand-year-old city with more than 44,000 inhabitants is the economic and cultural center of northern Thuringia. The historic city walk and the water axis connect the Petersberg with its terrace gardens, the many play stations, the high ropes course and climbing rocks with the city center. But also the beautiful surroundings and the wide range of leisure activities as well as the variety of art and culture give the city its endearing charm.

Anyone who strolls through Nordhausen with an open eye will encounter witnesses of a unique history everywhere. Tobacco and the grain distillery have made the town famous. In the museum of the traditional distillery you can learn about the history and technology of grain distilling. After the tour, in-house samples are served for tasting. The building of the present Museum Tobacco Storehouse has been a museum with an exhibition of crafts, trades, industry and archaeology since 1994.

The Kunsthaus Meyenburg is a center for art and culture in northern Thuringia and the Harz region, which aims to provide its visitors with a complex art experience at a high level with changing special exhibitions.

Flohburg - The Nordhausen Museum is an open and lively house. Over three floors, eventful city history from its beginnings to the present is vividly presented, supported by many media and audio stations. Many minerals, important archaeological finds, important writings, documents, coins and numerous interesting objects from many centuries guarantee an unforgettable visit to the museum for everyone.

The Nordhausen Theater is a real eye-catcher. The neoclassical building was inaugurated as a municipal theater in 1917 and was a real crowd puller in the 1920s. Today it offers its visitors a wide repertoire of performances, including ballet galas, concerts and plays.

The memory of the darkest chapter of the city is kept alive at the Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp Memorial in exhibitions in the new museum building, the learning and documentation center or the outdoor facilities.

Tip: A special attraction are the Harz narrow-gauge railroads with their steaming locomotives, which start here the winding journey into the Harz Mountains to the legendary Brocken.
