Hohenleuben is one of the smallest towns in East Thuringia and can look back on an old historical tradition: first mentioned in 1267; market law 1715; judicial office 1716; town charter 1928. Situated on a hill, surrounded by forest, meadow and river landscapes, the small town invites its visitors to linger. Particular attractions are the Hohenleuben town church with its altarpiece "Calvary" with the family crypt of the Reuss-Köstritz dynasty and an exhibition about the princely house, a permanent exhibition about the life and works of the last Gotha court painter Paul Emil Jacobs and the ruins of Reichenfels Castle. The town is also known for its prison.
