The town of Dornburg-Camburg has only existed since the merger of the towns of Dornburg and Camburg in 2010. Both towns are located on the Saale river, north of Jena, and are closely linked to regional development and the Saale valley. Both districts were castle locations. While the famous Dornburg castles with their beautiful gardens were built on the site of the castle in Dornburg, parts of the castle in Camburg have been preserved to this day.

The vineyards on the slopes of the Saale already bear witness to the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, which stretches from here to the north. The large expanses of forest in the Tautenburg Forest opposite the Dornburg castles are a popular hiking area.
