The district of Auleben of the rural municipality of Heringen/Helme is already 1200 years old. The village is home not only to various old knight's estates, but also to Humboldt Castle, where Wilhelm von Humboldt and his wife Caroline, whose family owned the building, lived for a time. A small museum of everyday history is privately operated in the historic "Alten Rüxleber Hof". Hikers and cyclists can, for example, explore the region around the Helmestausee lake from Auleben, which is an important species-rich bird breeding and resting area. A natural spectacle is particularly impressive in the fall, when thousands of cranes take a rest break here on their way south.
