Friedrich von Hardenberg, known as Novalis, lived in the house at Klosterstraße 24 with his family from the age of 13 until his early death at 28.
After successfully passing his law exams, he began further studies at the Freiberg Mining Academy in order to acquire specialist knowledge for his job as a salt works assessor. Throughout his studies, he was continually productive in literary terms, with the early and agonizing death of his 15-year-old fiancée having a strong influence on him and his literary work.
Among his most important works are the "Hymns to the Night" and the fragment "Henry of Ofterdingen," widely known for the symbolic figure of the "Blue Flower."
In the exhibition in the former residence and death house Novalis¢ the person of Friedrich von Hardenberg is presented in its entirety. In this context, not only his literary work is illuminated, but also his research and findings in the field of geology/mining.

In addition to the Baroque residence, the so-called "Novalis Pavilion" has been preserved and is located in the adjacent garden. The historic pavilion is used for readings and lectures, is open to visitors and can be booked for civil weddings.
Not far from this memorial is the current city park, where the poet found his final resting place. The idyllic "Poet's Corner" with memorial stone and Novalis bust commemorates him and his legacy.
