Together with the park area Vorderer and Hinterer Gotthardteich, the Südpark with an area of 23.5 hectares forms the largest contiguous green space in the city. Since the political change, the city of Merseburg has made great efforts to constantly make the park more attractive. Today, a children's playground with a climbing facility awaits the little visitors, but the Südpark also has a very special offer for young people with the streetball facility. The main attraction of Südpark is and remains the local animal park with its approximately 300 animals in 59 species, which is still available to visitors free of charge. A bus line, parking lots and bicycle paths guarantee easy accessibility. 

However, an extended walk from the city center through the green spaces of the Vordere and Hintere Gotthardteich with its rose garden to the Südpark is particularly recommended. In addition to the Südpark with its domestic animal park, the city of Merseburg offers you other "green" highlights such as the Stadtpark with its interesting flora and fauna crisscrossed by the supra-regional Saaleradwanderweg, which are worth discovering during a visit to the cathedral and university city of Merseburg.
