Bauhaus Hotel "House of the People"
Bauhaus Hotel "House of the People"
The Haus des Volkes in Probstzella is the largest and most extensive Bauhaus monument ensemble in Thuringia. It represents part of the history of the Bauhaus 1919-1933, the most important school of architecture, design and art in the 20th century.
Alfred Arndt is the architect of the building erected by Franz Itting. Arndt spent a large part of his most intensive creative period in Probstzella. This was the time of Hannes Meyer and Mies van der Rohe as directors of the Dessau Bauhaus. You will understand that due to Arndt's almost simultaneous work in the Bauhaus workshops and in Probstzella, the "Haus des Volkes" building was an indirect and also direct field of activity for the entire Dessau Bauhaus community. As proof of this, the House of the People was shown at the 1929/30 traveling exhibition of the Bauhaus in Basel, Zurich, Dessau, Essen, Breslau and Mannheim as a testament to Bauhaus achievements.
Today, the "Haus des Volkes" has awoken from the "slumber" in which it survived in the restricted area on the former GDR border. The Bauhaus ensemble has undergone exemplary reconstruction in recent years (including the color scheme of the interior and the Bauhaus furniture) and was awarded the "German Façade Prize". However, the Bauhaus Hotel is not a museum. Here you can enjoy the "Bauhaus spirit" in the cultural center or the gastronomy in the "Blue Hall" and on the "Arndt Terrace".
