Park and Villa Bergfried

The listed building ensemble Park and Villa Bergfried is located on a hill in the south of the town of Saalfeld. The chocolate manufacturer Dr. Ernst Hüther had it built between 1922 and 1924.
Old trees convey a sense of peace and security and the extensive park with its numerous resting places offers a very good view of the city and the Saale valley. The extensive Japanese garden bears witness to this and is unique in Thuringia.

The gardener's house at the foot of the Bergfried Park is the oldest house on the former garden site. The exhibition contains a wealth of information about the park and Villa Bergfried as a whole. Visitors can also learn more about chocolate production in Saalfeld and the life of chocolate manufacturer Karl Ernst Hüther and his family in the 1920s.

A special highlight is a virtual 360-degree tour of the villa's rooms, a multimedia image show of old and new views in and around the building and a drone flight over the entire Bergfried Park.

The bell tower in the grounds of the Bergfriedpark was built in 1927. A carillon consisting of 25 bells was installed in it. Today it is one of the oldest carillons in Germany. The end of the Second World War also marked the end of the "Hüther family history", as it was expropriated in 1948. The 20-hectare park with house, outbuildings and extensive Japanese garden is unique in Thuringia.
