As a branch church of the main church of St. Marien in the Sulzbach district, the village church of Herressen is simpler and somewhat smaller than the more magnificent main church.

The original church building for the parish of Herressen was erected in the 15th century; in the following centuries, structural changes and renovations were made time and again.

In 1867, the organ was installed by the Blankenhain master organ builder Adalbert Förtsch; since then, it has accompanied the church services almost without interruption.

Two bronze bells, which were cast in 1925 and 1963 in the former Apolda bell foundry Franz Schilling und Söhne, ring out for the church services.

Over the last few decades, the church has undergone repeated maintenance work, such as the installation of new windows, the redesign of the façade and the renovation of the roof. In the meantime, an electric bell system has also been installed and the interior has been upgraded thanks to the commitment of parishioners. The renovation was completed in 2019.
