In 1902, the town of Sömmerda purchased the old vicarage garden (30 acres) located directly between the Unstrut and the vicarage in order to create a public garden as an oasis of peace for its citizens. Following the suggestions of garden director Linné from Erfurt, the design of the future garden was approved by the town fathers on April 6, 1903 with a budget of 1400 marks. The ceremonial handover and opening of the city park took place at Whitsun.

A city park bridge, which was to lead over the Unstrut millrace into the new park, was planned the following year, the funds for it were approved and construction was carried out in the summer months. The interlocking tile manufacturer Hermann Martini Jr. donated the colored tiles needed for the roofing of the bridge. On 11.09.1904, the Stadtparkbrücke was officially opened with a promenade concert and has served as more than just a practical entrance to the Stadtpark ever since. It has been a popular photo motif for over 100 years and has become the city's landmark alongside the Erfurt Gate.

Following the necessary renovation in 1987, the decision to repair the pedestrian bridge including the retaining walls/bank walls was taken in 2012. On December 6, 2012, the ensemble was reopened following the extensive work. Today, the 17-metre-long and almost two-metre-wide wooden bridge looks almost as it did when it was built. Only its historic bricks could no longer be used and were reproduced according to the original model.
