The Straufhain castle ruins are a medieval castle complex in the Grabfeld, a historic area on the border between Thuringia and Bavaria. It was probably built in the 12th century by the Counts of Henneberg and served as a protective and administrative seat. The castle was the scene of several military conflicts, including during the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War. In the 17th century, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Today, parts of the curtain wall, the keep, the palace and the chapel still remain. The ruins are a popular excursion destination for hikers and history buffs. It offers a beautiful view over the Grabfeld and the Rhön.
