The Dienstedt karst cave is located about one kilometer from Dienstedt, on the left bank of the Ilm valley (directly on the Ilm valley cycle path). The small, manageable cave system was formed by the erosion of the primeval Ilm, which flowed through this labyrinth 2 billion years ago high above the current river bed (16 m), carving bizarre flow forms into the shell limestone.
