The small town of Schalkau lies on the southern slope of the south-eastern Thuringian Forest. The charming landscape is characterized by gentle valleys and steep valleys with rushing mountain streams. Schalkau and its districts reach as far north as the high slate mountains and as far south as the Coburg region. The Schaumburg ruins are the largest archaeological monument in the district.
