Great Inselsberg

At 916 meters above sea level, the Großer Inselsberg is the The highest elevation in the western Thuringian Forest, visible from afar. The Unique distant viewwhich in clear weather reaches as far as the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön and to the Brocken in the Harz Mountains makes it a popular excursion and hiking destination. The approximately 148 hectares of terrain around the mountain plateau is now a beautiful landscape conservation area. The most famous hiking trail in Thuringia, the Rennsteig, runs directly across the hilltop. It originally formed the border between the Principality of Saxe-Gotha-Coburg and Prussia. From the 21 meter high observation tower visitors can enjoy a 360° panoramic view. A section of the original transmission technology of the former telecommunications tower is on display on the lower floors. The tower is also a Exceptional climbing location: On the outer façade there is a 17 meter high climbing wall with climbing machine as the ideal "climbing partner". A three-meter-high bouldering wall is available for beginners and children.

Worth knowing: The name of the fourth highest mountain in Thuringia is partly derived from its prominent appearance After all, it towers over the surrounding peaks by 100 - 200m, which makes it look like an island. Others leave its Mountain peak from the sea which the whole of Thuringia is said to have once been. Finds of fish and plant imprints in slate tablets found here are used as proof of this. Even more legendary is the tale of the Heunen, Giantswho, in the imagination of our ancestors, would have created the mountain with their hands and, in the course of time and the development of the language, gave the former "Heunselberg" the name "Inselberg".
