Breitenholz is a typical Angerdorf, whose center developed around the Anger with lime tree and the church built in 1695. Remarkable is the picture of grace from the 15th century, which represents Mary with the child. Since 1655 Breitenholz has been a place of pilgrimage with annual pilgrimages to "Mary's Visitation". The first mention was in 1544 in a document of the von Wintzingerode family. The place name is derived from "breites Holz" (wide wood).
