Hüpstedt

Hüpstedt is a village on the edge of the Obereichsfeld and is part of the rural municipality of Dingelstädt in the Eichsfeld district. Hüpstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1124 and is now the largest village in the municipality.

Worth seeing in the village, which is characterized by agriculture and craftsmanship, are the Catholic Church of St. Martin and a Klüschen. The Hüpstedter Klüschen is located on the south-western edge of the village. According to legend, the small chapel was built by a man out of gratitude. One day, he set off on foot to fetch medicine for his seriously ill son in Dingelstädt. The journey was cold and arduous. On the way back, when he thought he had lost his way, he saw a small light burning in the distance. It was the candle his wife had put in the window. Full of joy, he rammed his walking stick into the ground and ran home. Where he had left the stick, he built the hut.

A local association is dedicated to preserving local customs. In the oldest building from the end of the 16th century and once the noble residence of the former manor house, the Eichsfelder Heimat- und Wanderverein Hüpstedt has set up a Museum of local history which offers guided tours by appointment. The exhibition inside has been well received by local and foreign visitors.

Numerous other excursion destinations in the immediate vicinity are ideal for hiking, pilgrimages and cycling in the region of the municipality and the Eichsfeld. Among other things, the 260 km long Eichsfeld hiking trail through Hüpstedt. Worth seeing is the Mühlhäuser moata rampart of the district town and former free imperial city Mulhouse. Built in the middle of the 14th century, it served to protect the royal estate from robber baron raids. The entire length of the 26 km long Mühlhäuser Landgraben can be hiked along a footpath.
