Wendehausen is nestled in a valley basin, surrounded by high deciduous and coniferous forests. The origin of the name is unclear. Some sources derive the name from a settlement of the Wends, who were defeated in a battle near Eisenach in 909. According to other sources, however, it is just as likely that the name originated in connection with the Gewende border (= border settlement), as Wendehausen lies directly on the southern border with Eichsfeld.

Among the sights in the village are the Boniface Church, built in 1720, and the Boniface Fountain. According to legend, the fountain was created as a result of a miracle performed by St. Boniface during a great drought.
