Untermaßfeld is a municipality in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Thuringia, which was first mentioned in a document in 837. The municipality has around 1350 inhabitants and belongs to the town of Meiningen as a fulfilling municipality. Untermaßfeld is located in the Werra Valley, between the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön, and is surrounded by the Stillberg and Hexenberg mountains. The municipality is known for its moated castle Maßfeldwhich was built in the 14th century and later served as a prison. Untermaßfeld offers many opportunities for hikes, bike tours and excursions in the surrounding area, for example to Meiningen, Eisenach or Oberhof.
