Taubach (near Weimar)

Within sight of Belvedere Palace, the district of Taubach nestles on the slope above the Ilm floodplains to the south-east of Weimar. People were already living in this area 80,000 years ago. The finds in the Ehringsdorf and Taubach travertine bear witness to this. 5,000 years ago, Linear and Linear Pottery people settled in this area. Taubach (Thovbeche) and its mill were first mentioned in a deed of gift on April 15, 1120, making it the oldest documented mill site in Thuringia. Wine was cultivated on the slopes above the Ilm valley. Today, only the field names "Vor den Weinbergen" and "In den Weinbergen" still refer to this. The first evidence of a church being built in Taubach dates back to 1462. Today's slender tower dates back to 1600 and a new organ was tested by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1710. The church was given its present appearance according to plans by the Weimar master builder Coudray.
