The town of Allstedt with its twelve districts lies on the border between Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia and looks back on a history of well over 1200 years. The town impresses from afar with its imposing castle and palace complex. The roots of this stately ensemble date back to the 8th century. As early as the 10th century, Allstedt became a royal court and later an important imperial palace of the Ottonians. In the centuries that followed, the buildings were rebuilt and extended several times and the character of a fortified castle was increasingly transformed into a palace. Allstedt was granted town rights in 1425. During the Reformation, in 1523, the theologian Thomas Müntzer became pastor in Allstedt and preached his famous sermon here. He was not the only famous guest - not only did almost all German kings and emperors from 935 to 1200 visit this important palace, Goethe also stayed in Allstedt several times. The famous poet wrote several acts of the well-known drama "Iphigenia in Tauris" at the castle. Today, visitors can learn more about this exciting history of Allstedt Castle and Palace in a museum. The charming landscape around Allstedt, nestled in the Goldene Aue, the foothills of the southern Harz Mountains and the Querfurter Platte, beckons visitors into nature - for hiking and cycling, for example on the "Salt Road", along historic salt trading routes.
