Altengottern
The municipality AltengotternAltengottern, which was first mentioned in a document in 811, lies on the left bank of the Unstrut between Bad Langensalza and Mühlhausen. Altengottern can look back on a long and eventful history. 1997 was the year of the 1000-year celebration, which was based on a documentary mention in the context of a donation by Emperor Otto III.
The image of the village, which stretches over a length of about 2 km, is determined by the two evangelical churches St. Trinity and St. Wigberti and the former Castle of the barons Marschall von Altengottern, which today houses a curative education home for children and youth. The infrastructure of the village is determined by a shopping market, a bank, a butcher's shop, a bakery and three restaurants.
The place offers itself as a starting point for excursions to the nearby UNESCO Hainich National Park, to the Center of Germany to the municipality of Vogtei and to Mulhouse or Bad Langensalza an. But also a detour into the surrounding area is worthwhile. Who has desire on landscape and nature, can go from here on the 2 km distant Red mountain go. The Rote Berg/Hopfenberg belongs to a series of Keuper hills that stretch like islands along the Unstrut between Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalza. The FFH protected area with a forest stand interspersed with old giant trees and scattered orchards offers relaxing peace and almost untouched nature. In good weather, the view extends far into the Thuringian Basin with its flat landscape to the right and left of the Unstrut. A hike to the Red Mountain should definitely the lime have as a goal. It is the landmark and coat of arms of the village, visible from afar. It has been sung about for hundreds of years, stories and poems have been written about it. In its shade it is good to rest before continuing on your way.
The 192 km long Unstrut Cycle Route leads past Altengottern.
