Altenstein Cave

During road construction work in 1799, workers discovered a cave beneath the Altenstein park. The naturally formed karst cave is therefore the oldest show cave in Thuringia. With its musical gallery, cave dome, cave lake and stream, it is considered an underground landscape garden. The Altenstein Cave is also a habitat for several species of bat.

Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen had the cave set up for visitors - as a kind of underground park, based on the Altenstein Landscape Park. This includes illuminated paths, underground squares, a music gallery and the cave dome. A cave stream runs underground through the entire cave and provides fascinating impressions. The Duke is said to have sailed a boat on the underground lake.

Following extensive renovation of the cave, including the outdoor facilities, it will be open to visitors again from December 2023. You can experience this fascinating underground scenery as part of guided tours and cultural events.

Tickets for the public guided tours are only available online or in the Tourist Information Bad Liebenstein available.
