The date of origin of the old cemetery of Zella St. Blasii is unknown. A „Gottesackerkirche vor den Toren von Zella“ was first mentioned in writing in 1665. It was demonstrably demolished in 1849 due to dilapidation. In 1879, the cemetery was extended, almost doubling its size on the west side. In the course of this, a new, straight network of paths was laid out. In 1895, a new mortuary was built on the foundations of the Gottesackerkirche. After the Second World War, the construction of a central cemetery for the town of Zella-Mehlis (Waldfriedhof) led to the closure of the old Zellaer Gottesacker on 30.06.1951 and its deconsecration in 1969. The majority of the graves were levelled until the 1970s.
