In the Middle Ages, the Alte Amtshaus was the seat of the centenary count and guilder, and from 1526 to 1720 it was the official residence of the Würzburg chief magistrate with a hunting lodge and riding lodge in the courtyard.

Since its restoration in 1976/77, the Alte Amtshaus has been used for concerts, exhibitions, readings and smaller conferences.
