It is part of the UNESO World Heritage Site "Classical Weimar": the Old Grammar School on Herderplatz. Founded in 1712 by Duke Wilhelm Ernst, it is the oldest school building in the city. Johann Gottfried Herder himself taught here. The three-storey baroque-style building bears the inscription "Soli deo gloria", Latin for "Glory to God alone". A sweeping, double flight of stairs leads to the Herder Fountain and the town church of St. Peter and Paul on the forecourt. The building now houses part of the Weimar city administration.
