Old castle Hummelshain with park
Old castle Hummelshain with park
The castle is located in the center of the village not far from the church.
It was built from 1660 to 1670 on the site of a hunting lodge of the Wettin electors. Until 1880 it was the center of the hunting and summer residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg.
Originally a late-medieval hunting lodge of the Wettin electors, multi-part plain building group, round tower and neo-Gothic portal on the north side of the main building.
Park
The palace park was created from 1830 onwards from the former Hetzgarten, a hunting estate of the dukes of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg. Influenced by Eduard Petzold, it is a landscape park of the second half of the 19th century and bears witness to German garden art in the late landscape style.
The Old Hunting Lodge was rebuilt into a "residential castle" suitable for the elderly from 2007 onwards. A tour of the interior is only possible after consultation with the owner.
