Ammerbach is a district in the southwest of Jena and lies in a funnel-shaped valley on the stream of the same name. East of the district there is a connection to the settlements of the city of Jena. The first written mention of Ammerbach is found in a papal document in 1228. In it a Chapel mentioned, which belongs to the parish church of Lobeda. The fact that the first mention occurred at a time when the chapel already existed suggests an older settlement of the place. There are traces of settlement in the area from Stone Age band ceramics from the 3rd millennium BC and from the younger Bronze Age through finds in a clay pit.

Ammerbach is a good starting point for trips to the city center of Jena and hikes in the extensive landscape protection and recreation area Jena Forest.
