Office building Themar
The Amtshaus Themar is probably the most striking building on the Shoe market. Its L-shaped ground plan means that it stands with two long façades in the square, which widens towards the market at this point, mediated by the building. The two wings of the building, which are at right angles to each other, rise in two imposing storeys of exposed timber framing and are each covered with high pitched roofs. The roof surfaces are brought together in a ridge towards the shoe market. The roof surface of the east wing, which faces the Werra and Römhild, has flat trailing dormers. The roof of the north wing is interrupted by a large dwarf house, the third storey of which is around a third of the width of the façade of the lower storeys and whose gable is so steep that its ridge line reaches the height of the main roof. However, as can easily be seen on closer inspection of the timberwork compared to that of the lower storeys, this dwarf house is all of more recent origin. It is recorded that in the course of a thorough renovation of the entire building around 1875 by the local master carpenter Christian Aßmus, a "mansard apartment was built" on the northern side of the building, among other things. It is currently not known whether the current dormer house was completely new or merely a replacement for a similar previous building. During this conversion, the wooden façade was also given a coat of brown paint to contrast with the light plaster surfaces, which brought out the beauty of the timber framing once again, as the wooden and plaster surfaces had previously been covered in thick layers of whitewash, which had obscured and thus disfigured the rich timber framing.
