The Anselm Gate served as a field-side fortress gate and sally port. It was accessed from the fortress via the Anselmipoterne, a covered path. The lower part of the poterne was rebuilt in 1828/29 in place of an older one further to the north. After the loss of the fortress status in 1873, the Anselmitor and the associated poterne were walled up and buried. In the course of fundamental restoration work, the structures were uncovered and restored between 1998 and 2005.
