In the valley and on the slopes of the Sulzbach valley, southwest of Apolda, lie the villages of Herressen and Sulzbach. The Sulzbach rises in Hammerstedt and flows through the Moorental valley towards Apolda until it flows into the Ilm in Nauendorf. The municipality has 1993 attached to the town of Apolda. Today Herressen-Sulzbach has an area of 541 ha. A total of 638 inhabitants live in the district. The honorary mayor of the district is Mr. Jochen Kürbs.
