The Auersberg is located in the Hessian Rhön and is part of the Hohe Rhön natural area. It is 757 meters high and is located not far from the municipality of Hilders. 
The Auersburg castle was probably built on the Auersberg around 1120. In 1354, a new castle was built on the hill in place of the castle, where the Würzburg bailiff had his seat. The castle was destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525.

Various hiking trails lead up the Auersberg to the castle ruins, of which the 8-metre-high surrounding walls can still be seen. A small pavilion on the outer wall offers a magnificent view over the Scheppenbach valley. There is a refuge for hikers inside the castle complex. 

The Auersberg is located on the premium hiking trail Extratour "Der Hilderser".
