Book umbrella viewing platform
Book umbrella viewing platform
A fantastic 360° panoramic view of the plateaus of the Hochrhön opens up on the Buchschirm at 746 m above sea level. There is a massive viewing platform here - the so-called "crown". To the west you can see the Wasserkuppe, at 950 m the highest mountain in the Rhön. The view continues over the Ulstertal valley and the Kuppenrhön with the striking Milseburg mountain. To the east, you can see the Thuringian Rhön and recognize Noah's sail, a lookout tower on the Ellenbogen. It is precisely these distant views and open landscapes that make the Rhön known as the "land of open distances".
The three panorama boards on the viewing platform help you to identify the mountains and peaks in the surrounding area.
Speaking of faraway places: you can also take climate-friendly long-distance trips from the book screen: you can look into the depths of space with your eyes. It's also worth visiting at night to discover the Rhön night sky: it's not for nothing that the region has been designated a star park. The star cinema offers you ideal conditions for exploring the Rhön night sky on your own.
The Buchschirm can be reached via the almost 12 km long premium hiking trail "Der Hilderser". This starts at the treading pool at the end of "Sandgasse" in Hilders, where there are also several parking spaces. Alternatively, the hike can also be started at the Köpfchen hiking parking lot or at the community center.
