The inconspicuous house at Kohlgasse 7 was owned by the Bach family for over 40 years. It is the only surviving house in which Johann Sebastian Bach came and went. He may even have lived in the building for some time.

The house was saved from demolition by dedicated associations together with the city of Arnstadt. The Arnstädter Altstadtkreis e.V., which today has its association headquarters in the Bachhaus, was in charge of the renovation.
