Bad Blankenburg

Froebel, lavender, tourism

Bad Blankenburg is a romantic town in the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Situated just a few kilometers behind the mouth of the Schwarza River, the gateway to the wildly romantic Schwarza Valley opens up to the south of the town. Bad Blankenburg is considered an ideal starting point to the various sights of the region. The 8 districts offer a wide spectrum of scenic richness. High up on the mountain sits the town's landmark Greifenstein Castle, one of the largest feudal castles in Germany. On the castle grounds, the eagle and falcon yard, unique in the region, offers spectacular flight demonstrations with various birds of prey from Easter to October.

Friedrich Froebel (1782- 1852) achieved world renown by founding the world's first kindergarten in Bad Blankenburg. In 2010, the Bad Blankenburg Froebel Museum celebrated its 100th birthday. The museum's diverse offerings, which annually welcome guests from around the world, include age-specific tours, specialized lectures, and play with Froebel's gifts. Since September 1998 the Antonius - spring in the spa pavilion of the spa park is available for drinking treatment and Kneipp's application.

Among the numerous hiking possibilities, the certified "Panoramaweg Schwarzatal" is the most important trail in the region, which connects the bow country of the Saale with the Rennsteig.

With the State Sports School, the city also has a modern sports and conference center. The city hall spans the range of cultural events, exhibitions and trade fairs. The Tourist and Service Center is also located here. The new contact point for guests and locals offers a wide range of services.

Since 1411, the traditional and specialty brewery in Watzdorf has exercised the brewing right, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. Hikers can stroll through the town on the Lavender Trail, enjoy views and, of course, breathe in the scent of lavender. Every summer, the people of Bad Blankenburg celebrate their Lavender Festival with the crowning of the Lavender Queen.
