Tip: In and around Bad Liebenstein, follow in the footsteps of Friedrich Fröbel (1782-1852), probably the most important German educator of the 19th century. His teaching methods and his invention of the "kindergarten" went from Thuringia around the world. Froebel spent the last years of his life in Bad Liebenstein and Schweina (Marienthal) from 1849 to 1852. In 1850 he founded the world's first kindergarten school in the so-called Marienthaler Schlösschen, and in the same year he organized a children's and play festival on the Altenstein. You can find his grave at the Schweina cemetery. The best way to explore these and other Froebel places in the area is on the Froebel circular hiking trail.
