Locals refer to the railroad junction in northern Thuringia as the main station. It was opened in 1866 and offers connections to Halle (Saale) Hbf, Leinefelde, Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, Erfurt Hbf, Sangerhausen, Heilbad Heiligenstadt and Göttingen, for example. The tracks have been connected by a station underpass since 1880. In addition to traditional passenger services, the station also serves as a freight station.
