Baroque village of Bendeleben with orangery
The tranquil village of Bendeleben, located directly on the Kyffhäuser mountains, is home to a historical treasure. Baroque is alive and well in this 1150-year-old village - in the historic manor house, the orangery and also in numerous residential buildings. The extensive castle park with its impressive trees and 7 ponds is one of the first examples of the transition from baroque to landscape gardens in Germany. It was created in 1765 by the privy councillor Baron Johann Jacob von Uckermann right next to his manorial estate. The ponds not only shape the character of the park, but are also a paradise for numerous bird species. With a bit of luck, you might spot a kingfisher or the rare short-eared owl, which is also out and about during the day and can be recognized by the loud clapping of its wings.
The extraordinary orangery was built in 1770 and the pleasure garden was designed. Both have been extensively renovated in recent years and now shine in new splendor as cultural monuments. The orangery, fountain, flight of steps, visual axis, path system with green areas are designed according to historical cornerstones and thus show the uniqueness of the gardens in the center of Bendeleben. Plants from nearby Sondershausen Castle still overwinter in the orangery's greenhouses with their unique glazing and sun mirrors, which provide optimum light and climatic conditions.
The monument and history association „Barockes Bendeleben“ e.V. offers guided tours of the castle park, the orangery and other monuments in the village for groups by appointment.
The baroque village of Bendeleben was an outdoor location for the 2021 Federal Horticultural Show in Erfurt.
