Barrier-free listening corridor
Barrier-free listening corridor
Today, there is a barrier-free listening gallery at the foot of this wall. Soldiers from the fortress garrison squatted in it and listened for possible scratching noises. In order to capture a fortress, enemy miners would try to dig underground passages to install explosive charges. Ventilation shafts could be used to raise the alarm quickly in an emergency. More than two kilometers of listening passages ran inside the fortress walls.
