The natural forest reserve at Gangolfsberg is part of the Core zone of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The volcanic rock at the "prism wall" is particularly impressive. Here the basalt has solidified and tilted into columns, and one could assume that someone had neatly stacked them on top of each other. Below lies the Devil's Cellar, a volcanic vent.

The 736 m high Gangolfsberg is located in the Bavarian Rhön, about 1 km west of the Schweinfurter Haus and 3 km southwest of the Rother Kuppe. To the southeast of the mountain, the nearest village is Oberelsbach on the edge of the Lange Rhön. At the foot of the mountain is the source of the Elsbach.

Geologically, Gangolfsberg is a basalt hilltop standing on a shell limestone base. The mountain is best known for its basalt columns.
