The Battenstein is a mountain near Hilders. Visitors can still see beautiful old beech trees here, which provided shelter for grazing cattle during storms. Herds of cattle can still be found on the Buchschirm plateau throughout the summer.

On the south-western slope of the Buchschirmberg, about 2 km east of Hilders on the road to Frankenheim, lies the 629 m high basalt rock group of the Battenstein with the pilgrimage chapel of St. Maria on the summit. 

The path to the chapel leads past 14 little station houses. These house wood-carved groups of figures depicting the Passion of Christ. The year 1706 can be read on the crossbeam of the chapel. Behind the chapel is the so-called "Poor Souls' Cottage" from 1827 with a stone relief of purgatory.
