St. Stephen's Mountain Church
St. Stephen's Mountain Church
St. Stephen's Church, which stands on a hill, is the oldest of the two Protestant parish churches and is mentioned in documents as early as 1196.
Above the south portal of the church, the year 1394 documents the start of extensive construction work. The south side of the church, made of local travertine, has a particularly impressive decorative façade. The older furnishings inside the church are worth seeing and include the altar with a stone mensa from 1684/85 and the altarpiece from 1631, a coffered wooden ceiling in the nave (mid-16th century), the pillar pulpit dated 1590 with a three-storey sounding board and around 50 stone gravestones from the 14th-18th century, most of which are laid in the floor. The organ in the western gallery was built in 1884/85 by local organ builder Friedrich Erdmann Petersilie (1825-1901). It is the largest organ from his workshop and is still played today.
